On Duisburg's Mercator Island, directly on the Rhine, a bust rises up into the sky. It is the head of Poseidon, modeled on the sculptor Markus Lüpertz. The god of the ancient Greek world of legends, who was responsible for the seas, sits enthroned on a 4.50 meter high pedestal. Together with the base, the bronze figure with the name "The Echo of Poseidon" reaches a height of ten meters.
Markus Lüpertz created the sculpture on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the port. The work of art was unveiled on May 27, 2016 in the presence of former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

Although it was built in 2016 for the 300th anniversary of the harbor, the artwork is not really easily accessible. Only over the Vinckeweg can you currently approach the sculpture. The stairs from the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke down to the top of Mercator-Insel is still closed. That is changing. Around the sculpture is currently a green area with walking paths and seating. By the end of 2018, the port park should be completed. An investor for river cruise ships is also planned. Later, a second access via a bridge from the Schifferbörse is to be added.

The colossal bronze sculpture by Markus Lüpertz stands on Mercator Island and can also be reached directly from the Friedrich-Ebert Bridge via a staircase. It looks as if it has just been roughly kneaded together from clay, although it is 6 meters high, weighs 11 tons and stands on a 4.5 m concrete base. The detour is worth it.More info:de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markus_LüpertzAnd then look at sculptures.
