Elie Chainwalk is an exhilarating 1,640 foot (500 m) long scramble along a series of chains attached to the cliffs. It takes around two hours to complete and you will need a good level of agility, confidence, fitness, technical ability and a definite spirit of adventure. However, solidly-planted steel chains, perfectly-placed footholds, and easy-to-grip volcanic rock make it a manageable challenge for most adventurers. PLEASE NOTE the chains are submerged at high tide so make sure you set of at least TWO HOURS BEFORE high tide. For more information on tide times, visit: bbc.co.uk/weather/coast_and_sea/tide_tables/7.

      Elie Chain Walk

One of the unique features of the Fife Coast is the Elie Chain Walk.

Chains are built into a section of the cliff west of Elie village, hugging the cliffs towards Kincraig Point and Shell Bay.

This is a challenging part of the Fife Coastline, and has been enjoyed for many years. If you are considering attempting it, please plan carefully, and be aware of the advice given below and repeated on signs at both ends of the Chain Walk.

ENSURE THE SAFETY OF YOURSELF AND THOSE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES.

      1. LOCATION

The Chain Walk is located some 1000 metres to the west of Earlsferry on the south Fife coast at national grid co-ordinates 346600, 699700 (NT 466, 997). Access from the east is from the village of Elie. Access from the west is via Shell Bay Caravan Park, but ask at the Caravan Park about vehicle parking. The Fife Coastal Path does not include the Chain Walk, but is situated on the cliffs above it, with a gradual descent towards the east.

See publications section on this page for location map.

PLEASE TAKE CARE - the terrain on this section of coast is precipitous and dangerous.

      2. WARNING SIGNS

These are located at both ends:

      Elie Chainwalk

      WARNING

This unique scramble will take you across hazardous coastal terrain for 0.5 km.

There are 8 chains, some vertical, with up to 10 metres height gain/loss.

      Allow 1 – 3 Hours.

Beware of the following risks to yourself and others with you:

Ø BECOMING TRAPPED BY THE INCOMING TIDE (the slopes above are very steep, loose and dangerous to climb)

Ø BEING STRUCK BY FALLING STONES AND ROCK

Ø FALLING FROM STEEP ROCK (secure hand and foot grip is essential, particularly when wet)

If you are wearing suitable clothing and footwear and decide to proceed, please do so with great care
