In a document dated May 18, 1301, Count Rainald I (Geldern) donated the watermill on the Niers River in Asper to the Cistercian nuns from Graefenthal Monastery. In return, a daily Holy Mass was said in the Count's House. The abbess leased the mill to the von family. Wachtendonk, which she in turn had managed by a head miller.

When the mill burned down in 1595, it was leased to the financially strong builder Hendrick von Beloe, the son-in-law of the head miller. Hendrick's descendants called themselves von de Loe and, from around 1800, van de Loo.
