Nice castle, also has inexpensive accommodation, and a small shop with delicious wine and other specialties.

Historic town center in Höxter, Corvey Castle!
Now used as an active hotel with a small kiosk!
The Weser cycle path leads past there!

In 822, in a strategically favorable location near the Hellweg, the first monastery in the Saxon region developed into an independent seat of power with supra-regional influence. The Benedictine monastery with its important library blossomed into an intellectual, cultural and economic center in the 9th and 10th centuries, providing important impulses for Christianization in Europe. Well-known bishops emerge from Corvey, and many rulers come to the Weser and hold imperial diets there.

The Carolingian westwork from the early days of the Benedictine abbey is of outstanding architectural significance. The mighty tower building with the entrance hall, which is still preserved today, is not only considered the oldest building in Westphalia, but also the oldest western building overall. Some of the magnificent wall paintings with scenes from the Odyssey have been preserved. Corvey is also unique from an archaeological point of view with its Carolingian monastery district, the Civitas.

During the Thirty Years' War, the medieval abbey was largely destroyed. It was only in the Baroque period through the efforts of various prince abbots that Corvey received a new boost before the prince-bishopric was finally dissolved in 1803. In 1820 Viktor Amadeus, Landgrave of Hesse-Rothenburg, became the new owner of Corvey. His heirs are the Dukes of Ratibor, the Princes of Corvey.
