Grossarl is located in Pongau in the province of Salzburg, about 70 km south of the city of Salzburg. The Großarltal is a spur of the Radstädter Tauern and separates the Hohen from the Niedere Tauern. It extends from the Arlscharte (2252 m) via Hüttschlag (1030 m), Großarl (924 m) and the Liechtenstein Gorge. The main towns are Grossarl and Hüttschlag (Hohe Tauern National Park). The Grossarl Valley is 27 km long from the Keeskogel to the mouth of the Salzach.
Grossarl lies on a fog-free high ground and is surrounded by mountains. Highest peak in the local area is the Gamskarkogel (2467 m above sea level) on the southwestern municipal boundary. Its lowest point is in the Liechtensteinklamm at 710 m above sea level. A.
