The church was built 1817-1820 according to drawings by Jacob Wilhelm Gerss and inaugurated in 1820. The tower was added in 1822. In the same place was previously a stone church from 1768 which was ravaged by fire on 7 August 1816. Strömstad's first church was a wooden church closer to the water.

The whitewashed cruciform church is in neoclassical style with a wide west tower, decorated by a toothed cornice and crowned by a lantern. The choir in the east has a semicircular end.
