Location: Pettenbach, Bezirk Kirchdorf, Upper Austria, Austria
In October 1967, the 20-meter high illuminated metal cross on the initiative of the Kameradschaftsbundes of the district Kirchdorf a.d. Krems built as a thank you for the return of many WWII soldiers. Illuminated it is far into the O.ö. Central space visible in it and represents a symbol of peace. The Peace Cross is located at an altitude of 717 meters.
If you want to take a short walk to the cross park your car, for example
at the church Heiligenleithen or at the inn Holzing
and hike the approximately 200 Höhenmenter up to the Peace Cross. That pays off in any case! Upstairs there is an opportunity to sit and rest and a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.

To the pilgrims lingering before this small sacred monument with its special dedication as a "Cross of Peace"—what more could the world need in these times?—I would like to offer Pope Leo XIV's welcoming words as a small personal encouragement to peace. Immediately after his election, before bestowing the traditional blessing "urbi et orbi" (to the city and the world) on the waiting faithful, he addressed the people gathered in St. Peter's Square, as well as those participating via radio, television, and online media, with these moving words:
+ "Peace be with you all! Dear brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd... I too hope that this greeting of peace will enter your hearts, reach your families, all people, wherever they are, all nations, the whole earth. Peace be with you!" This is the peace of the risen Christ, an unarmed and disarming peace, humble and persevering. It comes from God, the God who loves us all unconditionally."
(Robert Francis Prevost / Pope Leo XIV)
