The Heimatmuseum was originally a city tower on the city wall. It was first mentioned in 1352 as the Holy Spirit Chapel. The building served as a place of religion for poor craftsmen and travelers. After the Thirty Years' War, the Holy Spirit Chapel fell into disrepair. For years it remained as a ruin. In 1872 the ruin was to be replaced by a memorial, which was prohibited by the monument protection authority. It wasn't until 1936 that the ruins were removed. It received a half-timbered floor and a conical roof. The teacher Oskar Brachwitz set up his collection of local history items there. In 1939 the building was opened as a local museum.
