The town with today 100,000 inhabitants is named after the Portuguese explorer Diego Suarez, who landed here in 1543. According to another theory, he was named after the sailors Diégo Dias and Fernan Soares.
In the 2nd World War the harbor still had a special role to play, otherwise it was rather quiet here.
