Coinciding with the construction of the railway line from Cologne via Duisburg to Minden by the Köln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft from 1843 to 1847, the shareholders of the Ruhrort-Crefeld-Kreis Gladbacher railway company were looking for a way, cheap Ruhr coal to the industries on the left bank of the Rhine bring to.

For the construction of a bridge over the Rhine, the technical requirements were not yet mature. The Prussian military also resisted the construction of a permanent bridge over the Rhine. Therefore, the Ruhrort-Crefeld-Kreis Gladbacher railway company decided to build a Trajektanstalt between their left bank terminal Homberg and the right bank of the Ruhrort harbor.

To increase performance, the railway company decided to erect a lifting tower with a hydraulically operated lift on each bank beside the ramps. The systems were delivered and installed by an English company. With a height difference of a maximum of 8.50 meters, two freight cars or one passenger car could each be moved on a lift in the tower.

A paddle steamer 52 meters long and 8 meters wide, specially built for transport, was able to carry 12 freight cars or 4 passenger cars each time. The ship had four boilers and had two high chimneys on each side of the ship. In the interior of the ship there were rooms for the passengers who did not stay in the car.

The construction of the lifting facilities began in the summer of 1854. On May 1, 1856, the new facilities went into operation. In the same year, 47,050 wagons were transported. By the co-operation of the inclined planes, the performance could be increased on peak days. However, it came again and again to noticeable interruptions in the storm, ice drift and flood.

The railway port is part of the industrial heritage route.

The Café R(h)einblick is right next to the lifting tower and is a worthwhile destination in the evening after the bike tour. Live music is often played or other events add to the great atmosphere.
