Between Rees and Emmerich, where the Rhine is gradually leaving Germany, is one of the last Altrhein systems in the Lower Rhine. Several old-arm slings sway gently from the Rhine to the east and together form a semi-natural retreat that is unique in North Rhine-Westphalia. Bienener Altrhein, Millinger Meer and Hurler Meer are part of the typical floodplain landscape and are among the most valuable nature reserves in North Rhine-Westphalia.
