The valley is really great. I did not camp there, but spent some nice hours with the family there. You have to be careful that you do not burn yourself, but you can already find the right places.
My tip: smaratun.is spent there half a year in parental leave. Great location overlooking Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that paralyzed air traffic in Europe in 2009. From there it is not far to Skogarfoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Reykjadalur literally means "steaming valley". From Reykjavík, this river valley is easy to reach with a tour or of course your own car. The next town is Hveragerði. From here you can hike to the warm river that meanders through the valley.

It would be best to just pitch your tent near the steaming river and enjoy the northern lights above you as you bathe in the warm water. At least that's what my friend Sebastian did, who probably spent the best night of his life here.

Unfortunately, Icelanders' tolerance for wild camping has become very minimal over the years. If you prefer not to risk anything, there are nearby campsites Tjaldmiðstöðin á Flúðum, Tjaldsvæðið Laugagerði and Álfaskeið Camping Alfaskeid.

According to Hveragerði municipality, tents and open fires and barbecues are prohibited.

The route is a little more difficult in winter due to the amount of snow and some smooth ice, but it's worth it. Moving options are a bit spartan, somewhat uncomfortable in strong winds

The further up you go the river the hotter it gets. Depending on the waterlevels it might be necessary to walk up the stream to get hot water.

Be aware of the stench of rotten eggs.
