The Oppenauer Steige is always a physical challenge. The comparison with the Kandel, the highest mountain in the Central Black Forest, is certainly obvious, especially considering the climb from Waldkirch, which has an average gradient of about ten percent. However, the Oppenauer Steige is shorter and has fewer meters of elevation gain. I've cycled up both mountains many times and consider them to be in the same league.

Unfortunately, the Oppenauer Steige is very busy at rush hour, and on weekends, the many motorcyclists are annoying. The best times to cycle up the Oppenauer Steige are during the week around lunchtime.
