Worth seeing medieval old town center around the market square and the historic town hall. Listed ensemble. In the inn Löwen is the alchemist and magician Dr. med. Faust died, according to Zimmer's chronicle, because one of the supreme devils, Mephistophiles, broke his neck here. The corresponding quote from the chronicle can be read on the facade of the lion. Today it is believed that Burgherr Anton von Staufen had hired him as a goldmaker and he died in a chemical explosion.

Drilling that was carried out for the purpose of the new heating system for the town hall brought a reaction in the ground with it. Since that time (2013) the earth is moving and causes corresponding cracks in the houses. Therefore, z. T. banners attached to which it should be noted that Staufen should not tear.

Highlight of the small historic city center is the market square. Too bad that so many houses were damaged by the drilling. Since you have probably done a few calculations before wrong ......

In the "Kornhaus" you are in a historic building, which was probably built in 1410. Examinations of the basement bars showed that oak trees from the year 1405 were used for the house construction. In 1560 this building burned down and was rebuilt in 1568, as the inscription above the front door shows. The house was, as the name "Kornhaus" suggests, between 1569 and about 1790 used as a store of memory of the city. In the middle of the building was a shaft over four floors, in which loads were transported to the upper floors with a wooden spindle. This spindle hangs today in its original state in our staircase to the 1st floor. From about 1800, the "Kornhaus" was converted into a fire station. The upper floors were used as apartments and served as a shelter for Jewish citizens before and during the Second World War. After the war years, the "Kornhaus" business people were available as alternative camps. On the ground floor, in addition to fruit and vegetables, even clothing was sold. It was not until 1976 that the city, as the owner of the "Kornhaus", leased the building to a beer publisher who installed the first counter south of Freiburg (until then, only the regulars' table was known) and thus used "Kornhaus" as a restaurant.

Worthwhile is also the passage right past the town hall. Immediately the first street on the right leads to the non-touristic old town.

A really beautiful old town with great shops. In addition to a few chains, mostly lovingly designed small shops. Mega beautiful
