St. Cosmas and Damian in Wunstorf is today a Protestant church, dating back to 871 founded by the bishop Theodoric of Minden Kanonissenstift. It gets its name from the twin brothers Cosmas and Damian and served in the Middle Ages both as Archidiakonatskirche and as a collegiate and parish church. Colloquially, the church is locally referred to as a collegiate church to distinguish it against the nearby town church (also called Marktkirche) St. Bartholomew.

The gang of robbers of Nikol List (1654-1699), which was notorious and widespread in Saxony and Northern Germany and operated on a large scale, became known in particular for spectacular church robberies, such as those of the Hamburg Cathedral, the Golden Table in Lüneburg and the St. Catherine's Church in Braunschweig - certainly with local participation , because this crook syndicate had important bases and a large number of members in Blumenau and the surrounding area. As a result, numerous robberies took place in the area, including the visitation of the Wunstorf collegiate church by Cosmas and Damian on the night of March 27, 1696. They stole all the "holy vessels dedicated to worship", including the "vasa sacra", how also two gilded chalices, some set with precious stones, two gilded patens, a large silver pitcher, etc., and they did not even spare the poor box.
