The Himmelpforten monastery was founded in 1246 by Cistercian nuns on the banks of the Möhne. It existed until secularization at the beginning of the 19th century. The monastery church and the remaining buildings were destroyed in 1943 as a result of the bombing of Möhnetalsperre in the Möhne catastrophe.
