Originally there was a monastery of Cistercian nuns, which was closed in 1567 at this point.
The family of Mornico had it converted from 1645 to a stately villa. At the end of the 19th century, the beautiful garden along the lake shore was given its final appearance, enriched with a myriad of exotic plants from all over the world.
A tour of the garden (for a fee) is definitely recommended. The villa is not to be visited.
