The register of the castle estates from Lauf from 1275 mentions the "mill on the market" and three other mills here on the Pegnitz for the first time. At that time the place was not yet fortified - the city wall was only built after 1355.

In 1380 it can be read: "... the grinding mill gives the mill 3 fl (florenus aureus = guilders), 1 FH (Fastnachtshenne) and the town of Lauf 60 Pfg." The grinder paid taxes ("interest") to the wall mill , which in turn was a fief of the castle and was obliged to make corresponding payments.

In 1541, the grinding mill was specifically mentioned together with the wall mill (which no longer exists today): "Near the water gate, Michael Nider's grinding mill (5 grinding wheels) is located 'in the walls', opened to the city by a small door.

The mill house with grinder and stables are surrounded by walls. (...) The mill also has 1 grinding wheel, which drives 3 stones. The owners give interest to the mill. Müller and Schleifer each have a key to the little pass door.”
