The Praça de Dom Francisco Gomes is centrally located on the harbor basin and a good starting point for a visit to the old town. Immediately on the Praça stands a 15 m high obelisk, built in 1910 in honor of the son of the city, Ferreira d'Almeida (1847-1902), a diplomat and art collector.
