Glückauf-Park in Gelsenkirchen Hassel on the former site of the coking plant

In the 1950s, a central coking plant was built here on land that had previously been used for agriculture. It replaced the old coking plant that stood on the neighboring mine site in Westerholt. It was shut down in September 1999, and the power plant was shut down a few years later. The coking plant and power plant were demolished. While a new residential area was soon built on the power plant site, the area on the other side of the railway lines remained unused for a few years.

Then, from 2016, the wasteland was turned into a green area, which was completed in 2020 with just a few missing additions. As a "park of change", under the working title "Hassel district park" or, most beautifully, under the new name "Glückaufpark Hassel" (various spellings, including "Glückauf-Park" or "Glückauf Park"), visitors today can expect a hilly landscape criss-crossed by paved paths that can be used by cyclists and walkers.

There is a small lake in the middle. Benches near the shore allow you to take a short break with a view of the water. This is partly collected by rainwater from the site and, as a retention basin, makes a small contribution to flood protection in the city. In the western part, a high hill invites you to climb up the zigzag paths and look at the park from above. The large Oberscholven slag heap with its two wind turbines, the highest slag heap in the Ruhr area, can be seen not only from there. When looking west, it stands out from many locations in the park behind the houses of Hassel.

A relatively new park on the site of the former Hasse coking plant. Lots of greenery, few trees, but still worth a visit...
