The oldest parts of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Oswald in Großwalbur in Upper Franconia date back to the 12th century. A chapel was in Großwalbur long before 1400. A church and an associated vicarage are considered to be secured around 1400. The mother church of the vicarage was the parish of Oettingshausen, which was founded between 1250 and 1300 and previously belonged to the original parish of Heldburg.[

The fact that the church belonged to Heldburg is surprising, since Heldburg is in Thuringia.

St. Oswald's Church in Großwalbur is a significant building with a long and eventful history. It is believed that a chapel stood on this site long before 1400, and around 1400, a church with a vicarage is documented. The oldest part of the present church, particularly the lower floors of the tower, dates back to the 12th century.
Between 1477 and 1485, the church was extensively rebuilt, and the chancel was added, which has survived to this day. In 1538, the baptismal font and pulpit were installed. They are made of red sandstone and reflect the style of the time. Particularly striking on the pulpit is the large hourglass, which was once used to measure the length of sermons.
The church was once a fortified church, part of a fortification, surrounded by a high defensive wall that stood until 1772. Over the centuries, there were several renovations, including a major reconstruction in 1706/1707.
