Paupitzsch is a modern desolation that was located north of Delitzsch on the border from Saxony to Saxony-Anhalt and together with the Ritterhaus Neuhaus fell victim to the lignite mining by the Goitzsche open-cast mine in 1976. Today only the Paupitzscher See remind of the former village and the Neuhäuser See of the former manor.

After the Goitzsche opencast mine was closed in 1990, the Paupitzscher See nature reserve was established in the same year. The Paupitzscher See was created by the flooding of the Paupitzsch opencast mine from 1993 to 2005. An iron cross and an erratic boulder on the site of the former church commemorate the former site.

The Neuhaus open-cast mine was part of the Holzweißig-West open-cast mine (part of the Goitzsche), which was operated from 1958 to 1980. This remaining hole was also flooded from 1993 to 2005. This created Lake Neuhaus. Overflowing water is led into the hollow via the Goitzsche.
