The municipality of Grub am Forst lies southeast of the fortress town of Coburg. Its origins date back to 1288, when Kunemund von Sonneberg bequeathed the Grub mill to the then Sonnefeld nunnery. Like Coburg, Grub was part of the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg.
