"Mili" or "Milli" is a short form for military bathhouse.

The lake was built in 1936, when the area belonged to the military airfield Delmenhorst-Adelheide and for this purpose a lake was excavated, whose bank was then bordered with concrete. The resulting bathhouse was used until April 1945 by Wehrmacht soldiers. After 1945, the area and thus also the lake were made accessible to the public again. Until 1968, the lake was used as a public bathhouse and operated by the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO).
