The canal was built from 1769 to 1790 to drain the Teufelsmoor. It also served as a traffic route for the removal of peat, which was transported with peat barges towards Bremen and Hamburg. Today, the channel is no longer passable, but it is all the better for cycling along it.

In the 18th century, this canal was once used by Jurgen Christian Findorff to drain the Teufelsmoor and as a traffic route to transport peat towards Bremen and Hamburg (Wikipedia).
When you look at it, you get an idea of how laborious the colonization of the Teufelsmoor must have been before the vehicle was developed to series maturity and the road infrastructure was available.
