The natural monument of “Rotava” is a relic of a Tertiary volcano with an excellent example of the columnar form of basalt excretion. The wall of the former quarry is built up of up to 12 m high basalt columns, which resemble organ pipes. The columns were formed due to internal stresses as the volume of the basaltic lava decreases as it cools. From the top there is a wonderful view of the town of Rotava and its surroundings.
