Tips

  • The Galerieholländer, built in 1876, is one of only two surviving windmills in the Wesermarsch and has been the cultural center of the region since 1987 with around 30,000 guests annually. The community facility is run by the Seefelder Mühle cultural association with a lot of voluntary commitment.

  • A beautiful old mill, still fully functional. You can visit them and even get married in them. Very tasty cakes and other small dishes as well as a nice garden invite you to linger.

  • The Seefeld mill was bought and operated by master miller Johann Heinrich Höpken. Höpken had already acquired the Erdholländer mill in Schweierfeld in 1868. When a new competing mill was built in Schwei in 1873, the miller was looking for a better location for his work. Seefeld was attractive and had also been enlarged by around 490 hectares as a result of the embankment of the Augustgroden. Höpken initially planned to move his mill from Schweierfeld to Seefeld, but the opportunity arose to acquire an almost new mill from Oldenburg. The Oldenburg miller Hemmen had a new windmill built there in 1864 and now wanted to sell his old one. In 1874 the windmill at Stau in Oldenburg was dismantled. Construction work in Seefeld began on March 1, 1875. According to the purchase contract, the mill had to be built by May 1, 1876, but the work was probably completed by 1875.
Next to the Moorseer Mühle, the Seefelder Mühle is the last of around 120 mills in the Wesermarsch district. The mill was in commercial use until 1986.[3] After the Second World War it fell into disrepair. From 1978, however, it was extensively renovated by private individuals and later restored with public funds. It is now owned by the municipality and is now a well-known cultural and event center. The mill forms a station on the Frisian Mill Road and the Lower Saxony Mill Road.
