In the 20th century, Bourtange fell into disrepair, but in the 1960s a large-scale restoration project began to restore the fortress to its former glory. Today, Bourtange is an open-air museum where you can enjoy the restored fortifications, historic buildings and museums that highlight the city's history and military strategies of the time.

After experiencing its last battle in 1672, the fortress continued to serve in the defensive network on the German border until it was finally abandoned in 1851 and converted into a village. Bourtange now serves as a 'living' historical museum with authentic cafes, restaurants and accommodations.

A uniquely restored fortress with a crazy charm and flair!
The fortress was almost lost due to agricultural use and was reconstructed very lovingly and at great financial expense.
However, you can buy a combined ticket for the fortress museums.
