The museum shows a water-powered and fully functional hammer mill that has been used for over 100 years in a building that is at least 300 years old. In addition to the local history, the blacksmith's traditional craft is explained in the exhibition, demonstration and interactive media.
The grinding mill, driven by the flowing Bühlot, was converted into a hammer mill in 1891. Until 1961, the blacksmiths, most recently the brothers Eugen and Josef Geiser, produced all the tools for regional agriculture and forestry. The workshop and building decayed until 1994 before a group of Bühlertal citizens refurbished and restored the building complex and its technical equipment in more than 7,500 hours of volunteer work. The museum opened in 1999 and was recognized in 2002 by the Working Group on Home Care in the Karlsruhe Region as an exemplary home museum.
