At 587 meters, the Charlottenhöhle is one of the longest show caves in southern Germany and the longest accessible stalactite cave in the Swabian Alb. Discovered in 1893 by three carpenters from Hürben, it got its name from the then Queen Charlotte of Württemberg. In many thousands of years a true stalactite paradise was created in the corridors and halls. The first mammals to visit the cave probably included bats, but certainly cave bears. The bears left polished rocks in several places in the cave, cleaning their fur from dried mud and vermin. Ice Age hunters, as in the neighboring Lonetalhöhlen, were not detected in the Charlottenhöhle. An innovative LED lighting immerses the cave in a fascinating light. Special features, such as the sometimes very bizarre stalactite formations of the cave are impressively staged. The cave appears mysterious and original - the prehistoric times are within reach. The LED lighting was installed on the initiative of the Cave and Heritage Association Giengen-Hürben and the city of Giengen. The implementation of the project was made possible by grants from the LEADER program of the European Union. We recommend visitors to the cave wearing warm clothes and sturdy shoes. The temperature in the cave is around 9 ° C all year round. Visiting the cave is an impressive experience for both children and adults.Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the cave.
