The Lasker Rose Garden was designed for Magdalen College by landscape architect Sylvia Crowe in 1953 to commemorate the development in the 1940s of penicillin as an antibiotic by a 1945 Nobel Prize winning team led by the Australian pharmacologist Howard Walter Florey.

The Rose Garden commemorates the effort of the Oxford team which included the important contributions of Ernst Boris Chain, Norman Heatley and Edward Abraham, amongst others.
