A paddle streamer used to operate from here in the 18th Century, with crossings offered from Kirkcaldy and Burntisland and by 1845, there were eight steamer crossings per day in summer and six in winter. When the railway arrived in 1847, the ferry service declined, and instead offered excursions, before eventually stopping in 1857. A passenger Hovercraft had trial-runs here in 2007, however, the proposal was rejected across the water.
