It was founded in 1919 at the suggestion of Albert Caquot, making it one of the oldest museums of its kind in the world. The most important part of the collection today includes around 300 aircraft, most of which are on display. There is also a collection of rockets and spacecraft as well as a planetarium. An extensive aircraft engine collection is no longer accessible to the public. The extensive specialist library can be visited after registration. After the change of use of Le Bourget Airport, the current premises were occupied in 1975
