The name Zytanien came from the name of Zytan AG, which was founded in 1976 and at that time was based on the brickworks site and tried to process expanded clay pellets into heat-insulating bricks. The company ceased operation in 1981 and filed for bankruptcy. After dismantling the systems and machines that could still be used, the site was no longer used for commercial purposes, but instead from 1986 onwards to experiment with alternative ways of life, the site was occupied. In 2018, 21 people lived on the site, some of them in construction vehicles in the manner of a car park. With the proceeds of the Cytania Festival, the residents of the site maintain the buildings.
