Friesoythe was originally a chapel community within the parish of Altenoythe with the parish church of St. Vitus. The Gothic chapel probably dates from the end of the 14th century and was expanded and modified several times in the following centuries. The abortion took place in 1619, turning the previous chapel into a parish church. From 1885 to 1886 a church tower was built based on a design by Johann Bernhard Hensen. The current church building was built by Heinrich Flügel from 1908 to 1910, whereby the tower was preserved.
