A splendid example of sacred architecture of the seventeenth century, the church is located 3km from the town center among olive trees and ancient carob trees. Like many sacred places, it was built on an older rock site, already existing in 1400, following the discovery of a miraculous crucifix. After years of neglect the building was restored in early 2000 and used as a theater (both internal and external). Unfortunately, the theatrical experience did not last long and today it is once again abandoned.

According to the eighteenth-century Istoria di Monopoli by Giuseppe Indelli, the church already existed as a rock church in the sixteenth century, with the title Sant'Angelo "del Pagliarolo" or "de Pagliarolis". The sacred place was inserted in a cave and was in a state of neglect. In 1651 a miraculous finding of a crucifix took place, following which a church dedicated to the Crucifix by Pagliarolo or Pagliarulo was erected starting from 1652. A market was also established which was held from 2 to 4 May.

In 1727 the documents of the pastoral visit of Mons. Della Gatta show its appearance: the church had a dome, supported by four arches and altars on the walls. The public holiday was May 3.

The church of Cristo delle zolle is a seventeenth-century church in Monopoli, in the metropolitan city of Bari. Of monumental forms, it stands in the open countryside, about two kilometers from the city center.
