The “Rich Pond” is part of the pond landscape of the High Vogelsberg and includes the body of water and the surrounding grassland. The pond, which has been managed for over 300 years, has a wide, well-developed and periodically dry bank vegetation from reed beds and sedge communities. These are accompanied by bristle grass turf that is particularly worth protecting with rare plant species, wet meadows and pasture grassland as well as structured hedges. The small-scale mosaic of the different biotope types offers many, sometimes rare animals and plants valuable retreat areas. The “rich pond” is of particular and national importance for the bird world. Every year numerous, sometimes endangered birds come to breed, to look for food, to moult or to stop on the way to the summer and winter quarters in the nature reserve.
