Selby canal was opened in 1778 to provide a bypass to the lower River Aire and connect boats with the River Ouse at Selby. It's only 6 miles (10 km) long and includes two locks.
Nowadays it's managed by the Canal and River Trust and provides a peaceful walking route out of the town.
