Church of Santa Maria foris Portas

About two hundred meters from the ruins of the fortified city of Castelseprio, there is this simple church with ancient origins: it dates back to the 9th century. The devotion of the locals saved this building from destruction and abandonment. The church, with a single nave, has three apses (one on each side) and is preceded by an atrium with a large seventeenth-century arch. Inside there are very important frescoes, with scenes from the childhood of Jesus, from the early medieval period: they were painted between the 6th and 10th centuries. They are a rare example of transition between classical and Byzantine art: they were probably created by oriental workers, stylistic links with classical and ancient Roman painting are recognisable; rare in contemporary early medieval paintings.
