The original core of Herbolzheim is on the right bank of the Jag River. Probably as a result of the Hungarian invasions in the early 10th century, the manor of the town was relocated to the ridge on the left Jagstufen. Herbolzheim Castle probably grew out of it in the 12th century. It was the ancestral seat of the Knights of Herbolzheim, first mentioned in 1268.

You have to be careful under the bridge in summer (when there are a lot of cyclists) - oncoming traffic always races down and underestimates the small curve - they are usually far to the left so be careful at this point
