Paldalsa Temple was founded in 1895 by the Buddhist nun Ven. Hongbeom as a small hermitage at the foot of Paldalsan Mountain. During the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), it became affiliated with the Japanese Söto school of Buddhism. However, in 1940, the temple changed its affiliation to the Seonhakwon, which was founded in 1921 to reject the Japanification of local Buddhism and continue the Korean Buddhist tradition. The current temple complex was largely built in the 1980s under the initiative of the monk Ven. Beomhaeng. Notably, the outer wall of Yonghwajeon Hall is decorated with a humorous and unique painting of a tiger smoking a cigarette.
