Tilman Riemenschneider designed the Marian altar in the church around 1500, one of the last four existing altars. It's in very good condition. The Hergottskirche itself is significant in connection with the Reformation and the sale of indulgences. I love the Riemenschneider work and always look at the altar when I'm in Creglingen.

The Herrgottskirche in Creglingen is a Protestant church, the main work of which is the Marien Altar by Tilman Riemenschneider.

        history

A farmer found an intact host while plowing in 1384. A chapel was built at the site in 1389, which subsequently served as a place of pilgrimage. The church has been Protestant since 1530.

The Marien Altar stands in the middle of the nave of the Herrgottskirche in Creglingen and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is one of the most famous works by Tilman Riemenschneider. The style of the figurative execution speaks for an execution in the years after the completion of the Rothenburg Holy Blood Retable around 1505–1508.

The altar is 9.20 meters high and 3.68 meters wide. It consists of the predella, the central shrine, two side wings and the sprinkling.

In the predella, the adoration of the wise men, the reliquary compartment (the monstrance with the host was lost) and the extra-biblical story of how the five-year-old Jesus gives a speech to adults from a pulpit can be seen in three niches of equal size. [1]

The Assumption of Mary is depicted in the altarpiece. Left and right are the twelve apostles. The burst at the height of the altar shows the coronation of Mary. God the Father sits on the left and the Son on his throne on the right. In the left wing you can see the Visitation at the top, the Annunciation to Mary at the bottom and the birth of Jesus in the right wing at the top, and the presentation of Jesus in the temple at the bottom.

Every year on August 25th, the light falls through the west rosette onto the altar in such a way that the viewer can understand the Assumption of Mary with his own eyes. Originally this date was August 15th: the feast of the Assumption of Mary. Due to the calendar reform at the end of the 16th century, this day was postponed.
