In the 19th century, the water of the Weißen Elster was used to power the Mahlmühle in Bad Köstritz. Energy is currently being generated from the water. The chemical plant uses the dammed water as process water. However, the barrage is insurmountable for fish - neither through the Weiße Elster nor through the Mühlgraben.
