The competition venue for rowing and canoeing races, which was specially built for the XX Olympic Games, is located six kilometers north of the Olympic Park, half in the Munich city and half in the Oberschleissheim municipal area in the Dachauer Moos and covers an area of 850,000 square meters.

Since 1972, national and international competitions have been held regularly, from Bavarian championships to numerous world championships. In addition, the rowing and canoeing clubs of the Munich metropolitan region train here at the highest level.

With a length of exactly 2.23 kilometers, a width of 140 meters and a depth of 3.50 meters, the course offers space for races of up to 2,000 m on eight lanes and thus corresponds to the A1 classification of the World Rowing Association. Important from an athlete's point of view: Because the regatta facility was built parallel to the main wind direction of southwest/northeast, there are comparatively few waves even in strong winds and the conditions are the same for all lanes.

In addition to the rowing regattas, the facility is used for canoe races, canoe polo, swimming competitions, running events, cycling races, triathlons, corporate events and beach volleyball. The asphalt track around the course, on which coaches and fans can follow races by bike, is also a popular training area for inline skaters and racing cyclists.
