THE STORY BEHIND THE HUNGER TOWER IN RIESHOFEN

A farmer's son from Töging, Matthias Kornprobst, was persuaded by a Jew, Joseph von Töging, to rob the parish church in Riedenburg. He buried the stolen goods at the Pfennighof near Dietfurt. He later wanted to sell the vessels to Joseph. This theft was discovered and after long torture Matthias confessed to the crime. He was sentenced to death by the sword and publicly executed.

Joseph was sentenced to death by starvation and taken to the tower in Rieshofen. There he was lowered down the tower with ropes, where he died after 42 days.
Since then, the keep in Rieshofen has been called the "Hunger Tower".

The Wasserburg Rieshofen is located on a small, probably artificially created island on the Altmühl

Of the most important parts of a medieval castle in Rieshofen, the 18 m high keep is the best preserved. Its basement with 1.60 m thick walls served as a dungeon and had neither windows nor doors.
