A multilingual sign explains the story of its founding:
"On a Sunday in August 1935, the Sanctuary of Nuestra Senora de Lourdes was founded. We owe the fact that we have a sanctuary in El Cedro to an English lady named Florence Stephan Parry. Mrs. Stehan, or Dona Florencia, as she was also called, came to La Gemora to teach the children of Mario Novaro Parodi, an Italian who had married into the island and owned a canning factory in La Cantera, in the municipality of Alajero. When Mrs. Stephan retired, she had the Casa de la Paz built in Hermigua and began to realize her dream of building a sanctuary in the heart of the El Cedro forest."translated by
