In Altenburg, not only stands what is probably the oldest church in South Tyrol, but also another church built right above it, about a millennium later. This is the Church of St. Vigil, dedicated to St. Vigilius, Bishop of Trent. This saint is particularly venerated today in South Tyrol and Trentino. A church on this site was mentioned as early as the mid-9th century in the Letter of St. Vigilius, and subsequently in 1288, 1326, and 1390.
