As early as 1859, the Silvanus Altar (see below) was discovered during work on a field path, which was stuck in the ground at a depth of 60 cm with the bottom facing upwards. Stone foundations had already been found in this area, which suggested that an ancient farmstead was there.[2] Nevertheless, the site was used as a quarry on and off until 1928. In 1940, lines appeared in the dry grass to the east of the main house. They indicated the walls of other buildings. In 1987, aerial photographs taken by the Baden-Württemberg State Office for Monuments made it possible to precisely locate two large outbuildings.[3]

The first scientific test excavations were carried out in 1988. They showed that the walls of the main house were still preserved in the rubble heaps, some of them up to five meters high, but that only a few layers of stone remained from the outbuildings. In 2001/2002, the walls of a commercial building were completely archaeologically investigated under the leadership of the district archaeologist and the State Monument Office of Baden-Württemberg with the help of interested laypeople.
