Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)
The Daun Viaduct was built between 1907 and 1909 during the construction of the railway line Wengerohr-Daun. In 1981, the passenger traffic was discontinued, 1988 took place with the closure of freight transport, the decommissioning of the line. Already in 1990 the tracks were removed. In August 2000, a bike path was finally opened on the former railway line.
The bridge is a stone arch bridge with five arches. At a length of 103 meters, the viaduct crosses Federal Highway 257. The height is 28 meters. The span of the arches is 16 meters. Construction work for the single-track railway viaduct was carried out by Hochtief, with construction costs of 141,000 marks.
A short distance behind the viaduct comes a rest area. Here the story of the viaduct is told in words and pictures. Also, you have a nice view of Daun and the Dauner Burgberg.
The Maare-Moselle cycle path is peppered with wonderful highlights. It is best to sit in the bike bus in Bernkastel-Kues and get up early in the morning to Daun. Then you can enjoy the "departure" on the old railway line. A detour to the Eifel bell foundry Brockscheid and to the Vulkanhof goat dairy is worthwhile.
