Corfe Castle was probably settled 8000 years ago by Europeans who had immigrated from the mainland. Later, around 1300 B.C. The Durotriges, a Celtic tribe, probably also settled in the Corfe Castle area. Around AD 50, Romans settled near Corfe Castle, who most likely lived peacefully with the Celts at first. Nevertheless, the Romans later defeated and drove out the Celts at the Battle of Maiden Castle.
